Adopt-a-Horse

Horses are the foundation of what we do at TRI

You have the opportunity to adopt one of our delightful, good-natured program horses. No carrying water, throwing hay or mucking stalls is needed! A fully-deductible donation of $6000 covers all the care, feeding, stable comfort, nutritional and healthcare needs for your chosen horse for an entire year. Our staff provides the kindness and our participants provide the love and treats! You are recognized as the adoptive family on the stall and you will receive updates about your horse throughout the year. Of course you can schedule a visit to to check on them in person, and it’s always fun to introduce your family and friends … so bring them along!

Ariel

Adopted by the Farrehi Family

Registered Name: FF Ariel
Breed: Moriesian (Morgan/Friesian Cross)
Foaled: 2003
TRI Hire Date: 7/10/2016

Foaled in 2002, Ariel is a half-Friesian, half-Morgan mare. At first she appears to be a plain bay, but if you look closely, she has a tiny white snip on her muzzle. Ariel has a sweet, people-friendly personality, just like her half-sister Serena! Ariel came to TRI with a great deal of experience. She has dressage training, has been to shows, has gone on many trail rides, and has taught a number of kids how to ride. Her easy-going "been-there, done that" attitude and smooth, active gaits make her the perfect mount for a variety of riders.

Belle

Registered Name: La Belle Fille
Breed: American Warmblood
Foaled: 2005
TRI Hire Date: 4/15/2019

Belle’s full name—La Belle Fille—means beautiful girl, and she certainly fits the bill! Belle has a fetching star and snip, and came to us with dressage training and show experience. Belle excels in our para-dressage program. Belle was purchased with through a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan.

Hey Dobbs!

Registered Name: Equinox Declaration
Breed: American Morgan Horse
Foaled: 1997
TRI Hire Date: 10/21/2001

Equinox Declaration a.k.a. Hey Dobbs! is a 14.2 hand high registered Morgan gelding. Dobbs is an energetic, spunky horse who loves his job. He loves kids of all ages and excels working with riders who are becoming independent. Dobbs is also one of our para-dressage horses.

Ella

Breed: Percheron
Foaled: 2000

Ella is a purebred Percheron mare standing 16.2 hands high. Bred to pull great weight, Percherons are very strong horses. Ella can be daunting to lead and sidewalk because of her impressive size, but she is a gentle giant to handle. Ella excels working with our longer-legged riders and those who need a strong base of support.

Leon

Adopted by JoAnna and David Featherman

Registered Name: Metallic ABC
Breed: Araloosa (Appaloosa/Arabian Cross)
Foaled: 2006

Leon is a half-Appaloosa, half-Arabian sport horse with a stunning coat pattern. Before coming to TRI, this kind gelding competed in half-Arabian breed shows, both in hand and as a hunter. He has dressage training and lots of experience out on the trails. Leon is big—over 16 hands! He has smooth gaits with an outstanding walk. His temperament makes him a perfect choice for para-dressage as well as riders who are learning to ride independently.

Maddie

Breed: Irish Draught
Foaled: 2003

Maddie is an Irish Draught horse and stands 16.3 hands high. She was a champion jumper. Maddie absolutely loves everyone and is sweet, kind, and has the BEST manners!

Majic

Majic is a Welsh pony—strong, sure footed, and intelligent. He is fine-boned and only 12.3 hands high which limits him to smaller riders. He is well-trained—providing riders with active movement and correct feedback when they use their new riding skills.

Major

Breed: American Morgan Horse

Major’s sturdy 15-hand frame makes him a good choice for a variety of riders and sidewalkers. Major has a fun personality, perfect for beginning riders. He is also safe and tolerant—helping independent riders to develop their skills. Major has competed locally in western dressage, with great success. He is also one of our para-dressage horses.

Serena

Registered Name: Serene Sweetness
Breed: American Morgan Horse
Foaled: 2008
TRI Hire Date: 5/24/2014

Serena’s registered name is "Serene Sweetness." She is a 15.2hh bay Morgan mare who lives up to her name with a gentle temperament and excellent work ethic. She has smooth, forward gaits with natural balance. Serena is very versatile—she will take care of the most fragile of our riders and is also a proven para-dressage horse. She has earned a national championship in dressage through the American Morgan Horse Association’s Open Competition Program.

Sigbjorn

Breed: Norwegian Fjord

Sigbjorn is a 14.1-hand purebred Norweigian Fjord. He is a kind, steady moving, smooth-moving horse. He reliably carries our most fragile riders and also willingly works with riders transitioning to independence. His unique spiky mane and playful personality make him a favorite among riders, volunteers and staff.

Miz Skarlett

Registered Name: Miz Skarlett
Breed: Arabian
Foaled: 2007
TRI Hire Date: 12/3/2018

Skarlett is a beautiful Arabian mare with amazing breeding, brains, and personality. TRI thanks Paul and Kathy Kroll-Smoke for their generous, kind donation of this wonderful horse. Skarlett is good minded, has great conformation, and is very personable.

 

Spin Doctor

Breed: Arabian
Foaled: 2007
TRI Hire Date: 8/2020

Spin Doctor is a handsome 16 hands high Arabian gelding. Before coming to us, he had a career as a race horse AND a dressage horse! Spin earned a national championship at the 2016 Sport Horse National Arabian & Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show. Now he's enjoying life with us as a para-dressage schoolmaster.

Sweet Pea

Breed: Icelandic Horse
Foaled: 1996

Sweet Pea is an Icelandic Horse. Pea is a chestnut mare with (a lot of) flaxen mane and tail! She loves people and has worked with numerous children at summer camps and as a family mount. She is sweet, but can be quite bossy with her equine paddock mates! Her unique gait—called a tölt—is smooth, making her a perfect choice for riders who may not enjoy the bounciness of a trot.
