What is Para-Dressage?
“Para” refers to “parallel” and para-dressage riders are held to the same training standards as those competing in traditional dressage. Athletes with permanent, physical disabilities are assigned to different competition grades based on their functional abilities. Para-dressage offers competition opportunities from local horse shows through the Paralympics and World Equestrian Games.
The word “dressage” comes from a French word for “training” and it refers to the development of a horse and rider as a team, resulting in balance and harmony. Dressage improves flexibility, strength and accuracy, for both the horse and rider. A dressage test is performed to demonstrate training accomplishments. Basic dressage tests include straight lines, halts, circles (of various sizes), and changes of gait. Advanced dressage tests include lateral movements, collected and extended gaits. Dressage training is useful for riders of all disciplines and dressage shows are fun - with riders receiving feedback from the judge on each movement.
