TRI (Therapeutic Riding, Inc.) providing riders with Fun, Excitement, Challenge, and Therapeutic Adventure.
TRI-FECTA is TRI's largest fundraiser. This "race" helps us to earn the funds to feed and care for our beloved horses. Won't you help bring all of them across the finish line? Place your bets now for this year's race. Choose your favorite horse from the list on the right and fill out the donation form below. Check back here in December for the final standings. Thank you for supporting this very special program.
Thank you all for your support during our 2009 TRI-FECTA campaign. We truly appreciate your generosity on behalf of our horses and riders.
This year we had a surprise winner, the long shot I guess you'd call him/her! But, let's do this properly and not jump straight to the winner. Patience, patience - and no fair scrolling to the bottom!
Here are the final standings.
In 10th place was our little Robbie. He claimed that, since he wasn't currently working in classes, he didn't think he had to run. A likely story - he was just having too much fun goofing around. In 9th place was April or "Cranky April" as she came to be called. Funnily enough, once she started getting more bets in her honor, her personality really improved. By the end of the race, she was quite friendly!
After a strong start, Hey Dobbs got distracted by his buddy Robbie and dropped to 8th place. You know how those two are; once they start playing together, they forget about everything else. Dakota was a bit in front of the boys in 7th place. He was clearly torn - play with the boys or race with the "grown up horses".
The next three horses were so tightly packed we almost needed an instant replay to get the standings. Ella (6th), Sigbjorn (5th), and Fable (4th) were literally neck and neck; quite a feat when you consider two of them are ponies and Ella is a Percheron - a stretch for anybody's neck.
And finally, the ones you've been waiting for. In third, or "Show", is our wonderful mare, Hannah. Determined to show that just because she is a bit older doesn't mean she doesn't have her same old competitive streak, Hannah battled her way into the top three.
In second, or "Place", is last year's winner, B Smiley. It truly looked like he was going to run away with this year's race as well, but out of the back stretch came a challenger that he hadn't anticipated.
Have you figured it out yet? Who won the race?
In first place, or "Win",
Our amazing 31 year old pony proved that, just because you're a lady of "a certain age" doesn't mean you can't teach those youngsters a thing or two! Star raced off right at the beginning of the race and stayed in the top four the whole time, putting on a last burst of speed - and throwing in a few bucks while she was at it - at the last corner to earn her place in the Winner's Circle.
Congratulations, Star, on a race well run.
Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers, riders, and donors who made this campaign a success. Special thanks to the following people:
For bringing in the greatest number of bets:
For bringing in the largest amount of bets:
As a special prize, volunteer Carolyn Dekker found miniature horse figurines and hand painted each one to look like one of our horses. The likenesses were incredible and she kindly offered the horses (the miniatures, not the real ones) as prizes to the riders who brought in the most bets for each horse. The happy winning riders are:
If you weren't able to send in your donation before the official end of the race, you can still support TRI and our horses. Just go to the "Donate" page and fill out the donation form. Then you can either send in a check or donate via credit card on our secure page on PayPal.
Again, thank you to everyone who made our 2009 TRI-FECTA campaign a success. TRI is only able to do what we do because you support us financially. With gratitude,
Tracy, Jan, the TRI Board and Staff, and, of course, our horses!

Our 2008 TRI-FECTA saw us hosting our largest group of racers - all thirteen of our horses participated in the race. Our volunteers and riders showed their support and love for TRI by bringing in a fantastic $35,000 in donations! All of this money will be used to care for our horses - to buy their hay and feed, to pay their veterinary and farrier bills, and to pay for their daily care. We truly appreciate everyone's support and hard work. It took all of us working together to make this campaign a success. You are all Winners in our eyes.
Now, without further ado, here are the final standings for TRI-FECTA 2008.
There was never any doubt about who our winner was going to be this year. B Smiley flew out of the starting gate and never slowed down. The friends and family of Beth Smiley - his amazing human namesake, our Board Member, and friend, along with many riders and volunteers - made sure that B Smiley made Beth's special wish come true. She wanted him to be the "Winningest Horse in TRI-FECTA", her way of showing everyone how much TRI has meant to her. Beth, you did it! This is a record that will stand forever.
Cochise and Sigbjorn battled for second place right down to the finish line. There may also have been a little bit of self preservation driving them as, right behind them, and gaining fast, was our big girl, Ella. Here are her numbers, and the standings for the rest of the herd.
Special thanks go out to the following riders and volunteers who brought in either the largest dollar amount or the largest number of bets (donations).
On October 24, we continued our tradition of having our TRI-FECTA celebration at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Of course, we had to have the delicious meatballs and desserts from Basil Boys in Tecumseh and Carrie's delicious punch. Mike Hommel made the evening even more special by taking us all on a tour of the behind-the-scenes areas of the Gardens. Thanks go out to Linda Neely at Matthaei for making this evening possible and to Carrie Ashton, Anne McNally, Gail Nicklowitz, Rusty Towers, and Jan Vescelius for doing all the organizing necessary for us to have such a great time.
Now it's time to rest and recover, then begin planning your racing strategies for next year!
Once again, we were overwhelmed by the generosity and energy you showed us during our TRI-FECTA campaign. Our family of riders, volunteers, and donors brought in 575 donations for a fabulous total of over $37,000.00 for TRI-FECTA 2007! Many of our donors took advantage of our new website feature that allowed them to donate using their credit cards. This money will be used to pay for the hay, feed, veterinarian visits, and daily care of our wonderful herd of horses for the coming year.
Fable started the race off in fine style by blasting out of the starting gate and holding the lead for the first week. Then Sigbjorn decided to stop chewing on his reins and start racing. With that, he took the lead and never relinquished it. Dobbs and Star stayed close on his heels until the last week when Sigbjorn put on a burst of speed and flew across the finish line well ahead of anyone else.
So, our final standings were:
1st - Sigbjorn,
2nd - Star (beating Dobbs by $10.00!),
3rd - Dobbs.
Crossing the finish line behind our leaders were, in order: Hannah, George, April, Fable, Sympatico, DJ, and Robbie. Even our new horses, Ella and Dakota, received some donations in their honor!
We were thrilled to have so many of our volunteers and riders participate in this important fundraiser. We could not have been so successful without your help. Our thanks go out to all of you for your hard work and dedication. Special thanks go to the following people for bringing in either the top amount of donations, or the top number of donations.

On November 3, 2007, we all gathered at Matthaei Botanical Gardens for a delicious buffet and party to celebrate our efforts. Once again, Basil Boys of Tecumseh provided us with delicious food and Matthaei Botanical Gardens made for a beautiful setting. We want to thank Mike Hommel for helping to arrange the use of the Botanical Gardens, as well as Carrie Ashton, Anne McNally, Adrienne Nemura, and Rusty Towers for all their help preparing for this special event.
