TRI riders range in age from 3-69 years old. Our program provides therapeutic benefits to individuals with disabilities such as: autistic spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, hearing and visual impairments, Down Syndrome, and many other physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. Classes are conducted by instructors who are thoroughly trained in horsemanship and who have been certified as therapeutic riding instructors by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).
The warmth and motion of the horse help to relax and stretch muscles. The gait of the horse, which is similar to the human walk, tones muscles that are often unused. Therapeutic riding helps to improve balance, coordination, mobility, and posture.
A horse can supply a freedom that many riders do not experience in their daily life. The ability to control a horse adds a sense of power that increases confidence and self-esteem. Additionally, riders have the opportunity to socialize and make new friends.
Riders have the opportunity to socialize and make new friends. The program mutually
benefits the family who can share in a fun and positive experience. Volunteers share
in the success of their students, meet the challenge of new experiences and certainly
feel they make a difference in someone's life.
