TRI Groundbreaking

The Capital Campaign for the Harold and Kay Peplau Therapeutic Riding Center

In 1997, the Domino's Farms Land Development generously offered us the use of a small facility located on Joy Road. Since 1997, we have tripled our rider base and now have approximately 80 full time riders and well over 100 volunteers.

The downside of our success, is that we have between 60-90 people (mostly children) on the waiting list. Our riders wait for years to be admitted to the program. We are also limited in the times of year we can ride since our barn has no heat. Our riders, volunteers and staff are all challenged by our outdoor portable toilets. Unable to expand the program or facilities at our current location, the TRI Board of Directors made the decision that it was time for TRI to look for land and build a facility owned and operated by TRI. Our long-time TRI donors, Harold and Kay Peplau, pledged one million dollars to pay for the construction our new barn. The new Facility will be called the Harold and Kay Peplau Therapeutic Riding Center.

Following a year long search for property, a remarkable partnership evolved between the Lloyd and Mabel Johnson Foundation, The Legacy Land Conservancy and TRI. This partnership resulted in the purchase of 46 acres of land on Morgan Road in Pittsfield Township. The land was donated by the Johnson Foundation to the Land Conservancy, and sold at a fraction of its value to TRI. The property is ideally located for easy access for riders and volunteers, yet possesses the rural characteristics appropriate for a riding center. This partnership allowed us to acquire land otherwise cost prohibitive, and will preserve the property in a manner that is in keeping with the mission of the land trust.

TRI launched our Capital Campaign to raise the remaining funds needed to complete the project. Although we have been successful thanks to the generosity of individual donors and foundations- we haven't reached yet the finish line. To help us complete the campaign, in early 2010, the Lloyd and Mabel Johnson Foundation stepped up once again with a matching grant of $250,000 for each dollar we raise during this year.
